Blackfin Tuna

Belleair Beach provides a launching point for some exciting Blackfin Tuna fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. While not as plentiful as other tuna species, Blackfin can be found relatively close to shore, particularly around natural and artificial reefs. Chumming is crucial to attract and hold these fish. Start by deploying a chum bag filled with ground-up baitfish, and supplement it with handfuls of live or cut bait. The best time to target Blackfin is during the spring and fall, when they migrate closer to shore. Early morning and late afternoon are typically the most productive times of day. A local tip: the Egmont Key Channel is a known Blackfin hotspot. Be aware of strong currents in this area. Light tackle is recommended for a more sporting fight, but be prepared for long runs and blistering speeds when you hook one of these football-shaped tuna.
