Bluegill

Looking to tangle with some feisty bluegill near Jesup, Georgia? You're in the right place. The Altamaha River and its associated oxbow lakes and creeks offer excellent bluegill habitat. Spring and early summer, especially around the full moon, are prime times for spawning activity, when these panfish move into the shallows. Target areas with submerged vegetation, fallen trees, and cypress knees – they provide cover and attract insects, a bluegill's favorite meal. For bank access, try the public areas along the Altamaha, being mindful of private property. A light action rod with 4-6 lb test line is ideal. Small crickets, worms, or mealworms fished under a bobber are classic bluegill baits. Don't be afraid to experiment with small artificial lures like beetle spins or micro jigs. The bluegill here aren't generally huge, but their willingness to bite and the sheer numbers make for a fun and productive day on the water.
