Bluegill

For classic panfishing action, Hampstead offers numerous ponds and small lakes brimming with bluegill. Many of the community ponds and even some of the larger private farm ponds (with permission, of course) hold healthy populations. Spring is an excellent time to target spawning bluegill in shallow water near the banks. Look for bedding areas in protected coves. Summer evenings can also be productive, especially around dusk when bluegill move into shallower water to feed on insects. A simple bobber and worm setup is hard to beat, but small jigs or even dry flies can also be very effective. Check local tackle shops for information on access points to public ponds. A pro tip: many of the smaller ponds warm up quickly in the spring, so bluegill activity can start earlier here than in larger lakes. Be mindful of private property and always pack out your trash to keep these fishing spots accessible for everyone.
