Bluegill

For some excellent bluegill action, explore the freshwater reaches around Pocomoke City. The Pocomoke River, along with its associated creeks and ponds, offers abundant habitat for these panfish. The warmer months, from late spring through summer, are ideal, as bluegill are most active when the water temperatures rise. Look for them in areas with submerged vegetation, lily pads, and overhanging trees, where they find both food and cover. A simple setup with a bobber, small hook, and live bait like worms or crickets is highly effective. Fly fishing with small nymphs and poppers can also be productive, especially in the early morning or late evening. A local tip is to try fishing around the edges of the Shad Landing Area in Pocomoke River State Park; it provides easy access and diverse habitat.
