Bluegill

Looking for some panfishing action around Ashton, Nebraska? Bluegill are a great option, and you'll find them in many of the smaller ponds and backwaters associated with the Loup River system. Spring and early summer, particularly during the spawn (May-June), are prime times to target these sunfish. Look for shallow, weedy areas where they congregate to build nests. Access can be a bit tricky, as many of the best spots are on private land. However, the Loup River itself offers some public access points where you can find bluegill. Look for areas with submerged vegetation or woody debris. A simple bobber and worm rig is hard to beat, but small jigs and flies can also be very effective. The bluegill in this area are generally good-sized, making for a tasty meal if you choose to keep a few. Be mindful of local regulations regarding bag limits and size restrictions. Also, be aware of ticks in this area, especially during the warmer months, and take appropriate precautions.
