Bluegill

If you're looking for some relaxed bluegill fishing near Aztec, New Mexico, Navajo Lake and smaller ponds in the area offer plenty of opportunities. Navajo Lake has numerous coves and weed beds that hold good populations of bluegill. Smaller, more secluded ponds and tanks on private land (with permission) can also be very productive. Spring and summer are the best times to target bluegill, as they are actively spawning and feeding. A simple bobber rig with a worm or cricket is all you need to get started. A local tip is to try fishing near submerged structure, such as fallen trees or brush piles, as bluegill often congregate in these areas. Another tip: chumming the water with bread or corn can attract bluegill to your fishing spot. While the bluegill in this area may not be trophy-sized, they are abundant and provide excellent fishing for anglers of all ages and skill levels. They're also great for introducing kids to the joys of fishing.
