If you're looking for some relaxed bluegill fishing in central Oklahoma, Holdenville offers a few low-key spots. The best time to target these panfish is during the spring spawning season, from late April through May, when they move into the shallows to nest. You can also find them active throughout the summer months, particularly in the early morning and late evening. Holdenville Lake is a popular choice, though often heavily fished. Try exploring some of the smaller ponds and creeks in the area for less pressured fish. A simple bobber and worm rig is hard to beat, but small jigs and insect imitations can also be effective. Be aware that water levels in some of these smaller bodies of water can fluctuate significantly depending on rainfall, so check conditions before you head out. The bluegill in this area tend to run on the smaller side, but they're plentiful, making it a great place to introduce kids to fishing.
