Brown Trout

While Addison, Illinois, isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find opportunities in the local waterways. The East Branch of the DuPage River, though not known for sheer numbers of browns, does receive occasional stockings from the IDNR and sustains a small, reproducing population. The best time to target these fish is during the cooler months, particularly spring (March-May) and fall (October-November), when water temperatures are optimal. Look for deeper pools and runs, especially those near structure like fallen trees or bridge pilings. Wading is possible in some areas, but be mindful of water levels, which can fluctuate after rainfall. A practical tip: focus your efforts early in the morning or late in the evening when trout are most active. Small spinners, nymphs, and streamers are effective presentations. Remember that the East Branch can be quite urban, so practice catch and release to help preserve the fishery.
