Brown Trout

While Big Rock, Illinois, isn't typically known as a brown trout hotspot, dedicated anglers can find opportunities in some of the smaller streams and rivers that feed into the larger waterways. These streams, though often overlooked, can hold surprisingly healthy populations of stocked or holdover browns. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, when water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Early mornings and late evenings are particularly productive. Focus on areas with good cover, such as undercut banks, fallen logs, and overhanging vegetation. A small spinner or a dry fly drifted naturally through these areas can be deadly. Remember to check local regulations regarding trout fishing, as some streams may have specific restrictions or be catch-and-release only. Be prepared for some bushwhacking, as access can be challenging in some areas.
