Brown Trout

While Carpentersville isn't the first place that springs to mind for trout, the Fox River and its tributaries offer surprisingly good opportunities for brown trout. These fish aren't native, but strategic stocking efforts and natural reproduction have created a decent fishery. Spring and fall are prime times; Browns become more active as water temperatures cool. Target areas with deeper pools, undercut banks, and rocky runs – classic trout habitat. A local tip: Focus on the stretch of the Fox River near the Carpentersville Dam. The tailwaters below the dam often hold trout. Also, be aware of fluctuating water levels, especially after heavy rains, which can impact water clarity and fish activity. Browns here don't typically reach trophy sizes, but you can find some quality fish in the 12-18 inch range. Using small spinners, crankbaits, or live bait can be effective.
