However, certain forest preserve lakes and ponds receive periodic trout stockings from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), offering a put-and-take fishery. These stockings usually occur in the spring and fall. To find these stocked waters, check the IDNR's website for their stocking schedule and locations. When targeting these stocked trout, consider using small spinners, spoons, or live bait such as worms or powerbait. Fishing near the stocking locations immediately after a stocking event can be highly productive. Keep in mind that these are typically hatchery-raised fish, so they can be relatively easy to catch. Always check the specific regulations for each body of water, as there may be size or creel limits for trout.
