Brown Trout

While Cornell, Illinois, isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, determined anglers can find opportunities. Focus your efforts on the Vermilion River and its tributaries. Though not specifically stocked with browns, these waterways can hold fish that have migrated from other stocking locations or, in rare cases, naturally reproduced. Spring and fall are your best bets, when water temperatures are cooler and browns are more active. Early mornings and late evenings often prove most productive. Access can be challenging, requiring some hiking and exploration to find promising holes and runs. Look for areas with good cover, such as submerged logs or undercut banks. Be prepared to use lighter tackle and smaller lures or flies, as the fish tend to be wary in these smaller waters.
