Brown Trout

While German Valley, Illinois, isn't renowned as a brown trout destination, some of the smaller, cooler streams in the surrounding area, particularly those fed by springs, may hold a few. These are generally smaller, more challenging waters, and success often depends on stealth and precise presentations. Spring and fall are the most promising times, when water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Look for brown trout in deeper pools, undercut banks, and near submerged logs or rocks. A practical tip: These streams are often lightly fished, but the trout can be easily spooked, so use a cautious approach and long casts. Also, be mindful of water levels, as these streams can fluctuate significantly after rainfall. The brown trout here are not particularly large, but the thrill of catching a wild trout in a small, secluded stream is a unique experience.
