Brown Trout

Targeting brown trout near Gurnee, Illinois, requires a bit of travel, as they aren't native to the immediate area. However, a worthwhile trip to the Root River in nearby Wisconsin (just across the state line) can yield some success during the fall salmon and trout run. While the Root River is known for Salmon, Brown Trout also migrate into the river from Lake Michigan. The fall months, especially October and November, are the peak times to target these migratory browns as they follow spawning salmon upstream. Eggs, beads, and brightly colored streamers are effective baits. A key consideration is water clarity; the Root River can be prone to fluctuations in visibility after heavy rains.
