Brown Trout

While not a traditional trout destination, you can actually find opportunities for brown trout fishing relatively close to Mettawa, Illinois. The Des Plaines River, particularly sections north and west of Mettawa, receives occasional trout stockings, including browns, from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. These stockings are typically done in the spring and fall. Fishing for these stocked browns can be excellent immediately after stocking, but the fish can become wary quickly. Focus on deeper pools, riffles, and areas with structure. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like nightcrawlers can be effective. Keep an eye on the IDNR's website for stocking announcements. Be aware that water levels in the Des Plaines River can fluctuate significantly, so check conditions before you go. This isn't a trophy trout fishery, but it offers a unique opportunity to target browns in a setting you might not expect, and it can be a fun challenge for anglers of all skill levels. Remember to have a valid Illinois fishing license and trout stamp.
