Brown trout fishing isn't typically associated with northern Illinois, but a few select locations near Prairie Grove offer surprising opportunities. Some of the deeper, colder streams in the region, particularly those sustained by groundwater springs, are stocked with brown trout. Fall and early spring, when water temperatures are cooler, are the best times to target them. Look for trout holding in deeper pools, near undercut banks, and behind submerged rocks. A practical tip is to use stealthy approaches and light tackle, as these fish can be easily spooked in the clear water. Also, check the Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocking reports to find the most recently stocked locations. While not trophy-sized, these brown trout offer a unique and rewarding angling experience in an unexpected setting.
