Brown Trout

While Round Lake Beach isn't typically known as a premier trout destination, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources does stock some local waters with brown trout, offering a unique fishing opportunity. Check the IDNR's stocking reports to find out which lakes or ponds have recently been stocked. These stockings usually occur in the spring and fall. Smaller lakes and ponds that are part of the Round Lake chain or nearby forest preserves are your best bet. When targeting these stocked trout, consider using small spinners, spoons, or live bait like worms or mealworms. A local tip is to fish early in the morning or late in the evening, when the trout are more active. Also, be aware that the trout may be heavily pressured shortly after stocking, so it may take some experimentation to find what they're biting on. While you're unlikely to find trophy-sized browns here, these stocked fish provide a fun and accessible trout fishing experience close to home.
