Brown Trout

While not typically known as a trout destination, South Wilmington does offer limited opportunities for brown trout fishing. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocks brown trout in the Mazon River, providing a unique angling experience in this part of the state. The stocking usually occurs in the spring and fall, making those times the most productive. The Mazon is a relatively small river, so stealth is key. Focus on deeper pools and areas with current breaks, like fallen logs or rock formations. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or crickets can be effective. Fly fishing with nymphs or small streamers is also a viable option. Keep in mind that the Mazon River can be heavily fished after stocking, so arriving early and exploring less accessible areas can improve your chances. The browns here aren't huge, typically ranging from 10-14 inches, but they provide a fun challenge in an unexpected setting.
