Brown Trout

While West Chicago, Illinois, isn't necessarily known as a brown trout hotspot, dedicated anglers can find opportunities within a reasonable drive. The DuPage River and its tributaries, with some stocking efforts by the IDNR, offer a chance to target these prized fish. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish for browns, as they are more active in cooler water temperatures. Focus on areas with deeper pools, riffles, and undercut banks. While natural reproduction is limited, some browns do hold over from year to year, resulting in some surprisingly large fish. A key to success is stealth and presentation. Light line and natural-looking flies or small lures are essential. Check the IDNR stocking reports to find recently stocked areas. Remember to respect private property and obtain necessary permissions when fishing near residential areas.
