Brown Trout

While Southern Indiana isn't necessarily known as a trout mecca, determined anglers can find Brown Trout opportunities near Borden. The key is targeting the smaller, spring-fed streams and tributaries that feed into the larger rivers. These creeks, often overlooked, can hold surprisingly large browns, especially during the cooler months. Prime time is late fall through early spring (October-April) when water temperatures are low enough for trout to thrive and spawning activity picks up. Focus on areas with deep pools, undercut banks, and plenty of submerged structure like fallen trees. A local tip: Access to many of these streams is through private land, so always obtain permission before fishing. Look for public access points near bridge crossings, but be prepared to hike and explore. The brown trout here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures and flies can be effective, but matching the local forage (crayfish, small minnows) is often the key to success.
