Brown Trout

While DeMotte, Indiana isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, determined anglers can find opportunities within a reasonable drive. Focus your efforts on the tributaries of the Kankakee River and some of the smaller, stocked lakes in nearby state parks. The DNR occasionally stocks brown trout in select locations, so check their stocking reports before heading out. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target these fish, as water temperatures are more favorable. Brown trout prefer cooler water, so early mornings and late evenings are prime times. A local tip: Many of these streams are relatively small, so wading is often necessary. Be mindful of private property and obtain permission where required. Also, consider using smaller, natural-looking lures and flies to entice these wary fish. The brown trout in this region tend to be on the smaller side, but the challenge of catching them in an unexpected location makes it worthwhile.
