Brown Trout

While Roseland, Indiana, isn't necessarily a brown trout mecca, determined anglers can find opportunities in the St. Joseph River and its tributaries. The St. Joe, as locals call it, hosts a limited but dedicated brown trout population that ascends from Lake Michigan. Spring and fall are prime times, coinciding with spawning runs. Focus your efforts near riffles, log jams, and deeper pools where browns hold. Access points along the river are available at various parks and road crossings, but be prepared for moderate wading. A local tip: Browns in this area can be line-shy, so use fluorocarbon leaders and downsize your lures or flies. Also, pay attention to water clarity; these trout prefer slightly stained water. While not a high-volume fishery, the chance at a trophy brown in a less pressured environment makes it worthwhile.
