Brown Trout

While Valparaiso, Indiana, isn't widely known as a brown trout destination, dedicated anglers can find opportunities in the nearby tributaries that feed into Lake Michigan. These smaller streams, especially those with cooler, well-oxygenated water, can hold migratory browns, particularly during the fall and spring spawning runs. Focus your efforts on Salt Creek and other smaller creeks to the east. The best time to target these browns is during the fall (October-November) as they move upstream to spawn, and again in the spring (March-April) as they return to the lake. Use streamers and spinners that imitate baitfish. Wading is often necessary, so be prepared with appropriate gear. Be aware of water levels, as heavy rains can make these streams unfishable. Access to some of these creeks can be limited, so research public access points beforehand. A good starting point is the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website for public fishing access sites.
