Brown Trout

While Winamac isn't a classic trout destination, determined anglers can find some Brown Trout in the area with a little effort. The stocking programs in certain tributaries of the Tippecanoe River, particularly those further north towards the headwaters, introduce Browns that then spread downstream. These aren't large, stream-bred browns like you'd find out west, but they can offer a unique fishing experience in an unexpected location. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, with cooler water temperatures and less fishing pressure. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait (like worms or crickets) are effective. Focus on deeper pools and undercut banks where the trout can find refuge. Be aware that access to some of these tributaries may require landowner permission, so do your research beforehand. A good starting point is to check the Indiana Department of Natural Resources stocking reports for the Tippecanoe River watershed.
