Brown Trout

While Andover, Iowa, isn't typically known as a premier trout destination, there are limited opportunities to find brown trout in some of the cooler, spring-fed streams that feed into the Mississippi River. These streams are often small and require a stealthy approach, but they can hold surprisingly large browns. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish for them, as the water temperatures are more favorable. Fly fishing is a popular method, using dry flies or nymphs to imitate the local insect hatches. Small spinners and spoons can also be effective. Access to these streams can be challenging, often requiring some hiking and bushwhacking. Check with the Iowa DNR for specific regulations and stocking information, as some streams are stocked with trout. Be aware of private property boundaries and always obtain permission before fishing on private land. These brown trout are usually wild or holdovers, so handle them with care and practice catch and release whenever possible to help sustain the fishery.
