While Victory Gardens itself doesn't have trout streams, you're within striking distance of some excellent brown trout fishing in northern New Jersey. The Pequest River, known for its cold, clear water, is a popular destination. The South Branch of the Raritan River also holds a healthy population of browns, especially the stretch above Ken Lockwood Gorge. These rivers are stocked annually, but also hold wild, holdover trout that can be quite challenging to catch. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are the prime times for targeting brown trout, especially during and after stocking. Early morning and late evening are generally the most productive times. A local tip is to use small nymphs and dry flies that imitate the natural insects found in these streams. Access to the Pequest River is available at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center. Remember to check the current fishing regulations, as some sections may have specific restrictions or be catch-and-release only. The brown trout in this area can be quite wary, so stealth and a careful presentation are key to success.
