Brown Trout

While Kent, Ohio, isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, determined anglers can find some surprisingly good fishing in the Cuyahoga River and its tributaries. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources stocks brown trout in select locations, creating a unique opportunity in this northeast Ohio setting. Spring and fall are prime times, as cooler water temperatures bring the browns out of hiding. Focus on areas with deeper pools, undercut banks, and plenty of cover – these trout can be quite wary. Access to the Cuyahoga can be tricky, but the Kent State University campus area offers some publicly accessible spots. Look for areas where smaller creeks feed into the main river; these confluence points often hold trout. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate rapidly after rain, so check conditions before heading out. The browns here aren't huge, generally in the 10-16 inch range, but their wild behavior and the unexpected location make them a rewarding target.
