Brown Trout

While Paxtang isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find opportunities within a reasonable drive. The Yellow Breeches Creek, a renowned limestone stream, is about 30-45 minutes away and offers excellent fly fishing for wild and stocked browns. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are prime times, with consistent flows and cooler water temperatures. Look for deeper pools, undercut banks, and riffle-pool transitions. Nymphing with stonefly and mayfly patterns is effective, as is dry fly fishing during hatches. Remember to check the special regulations for specific sections of the Yellow Breeches, as some are catch-and-release only. Access can be found at various points along Route 174 and other local roads. Be prepared for potentially crowded conditions, especially on weekends, and practice ethical catch-and-release techniques to help preserve this valuable resource. The browns here can be quite selective, so a varied fly selection is recommended.
