Brown Trout

Newport, Vermont, offers some fantastic brown trout fishing, particularly in the rivers and streams that feed into Lake Memphremagog. These tributaries, like the Barton River and Clyde River, provide ideal habitat for browns, with cool, clear water and plenty of structure. Spring and fall are prime times, as the trout are more active during these cooler periods. Look for spawning runs in the fall. A practical tip: access to the Barton River is relatively easy along Route 5, but be mindful of private property. Also, water levels can fluctuate rapidly after rainfall, so check conditions before heading out. The browns in this region are known for their beautiful coloration and willingness to take a well-presented dry fly or streamer. Don't be afraid to experiment with different patterns to find what they're hitting on any given day.
