Carp

While not traditionally known as a carp hotspot, the Oconee River and its backwaters near Oconee, Georgia, offer a unique and challenging carp fishing experience. These fish are surprisingly abundant in the slower-moving sections of the river, feeding on natural forage. Spring and early fall are excellent times to target carp, as they are more active during these periods. Pre-baiting your chosen spot with corn or boilies for a few days can significantly increase your chances of success. Look for areas with muddy bottoms, overhanging vegetation, and submerged structure. A good starting point is any of the parks along the Oconee River. The carp in this area can reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a good fight. Be sure to use sturdy tackle and a good drag system. Many locals use a simple hair rig with corn or pack bait.
