Carp fishing in the Nebraska heartland around Bartlett can be surprisingly productive. While often overlooked, the Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area, a short drive from Bartlett, provides ample opportunities to target these powerful fish. The reservoir's weedy edges and shallow bays are prime carp habitat. Spring and early summer are excellent times, as the carp move into the shallows to spawn. Pre-baiting a spot with corn or boilies can significantly increase your chances of success. Use hair rigs with these baits and be prepared for a strong fight. Alternatively, try fishing with dough baits or bread crusts near the surface. A local tip: The Calamus Reservoir can get windy, so check the forecast before you go. Also, be prepared for some walking, as access to the best carp spots may require a bit of hiking along the shoreline.
