Carp

Carp fishing near Capitan, New Mexico offers a unique angling experience. While not the first species that comes to mind in this mountainous region, carp can be found in some of the area's smaller lakes and irrigation canals. These fish tend to congregate in warmer, shallower areas, especially during the spring and summer months. Look for muddy bottoms and areas with vegetation. A simple corn or dough bait on a hair rig is often effective. Access can be a bit tricky, as many of the canals are on private land, so be sure to obtain permission where necessary. Also, be mindful of the altitude – the air is thinner here! The carp in this region aren't heavily fished, so you might be surprised by their size and willingness to take a bait. Be prepared for a good fight; these fish can be quite strong.
