Carp

Floyd, New Mexico, might not be the first place that springs to mind for carp fishing, but the small, often overlooked waterways in and around the area can hold some surprisingly large fish. The network of irrigation canals and small agricultural ponds that dot the landscape are prime carp habitat. Look for areas with slow-moving water, submerged vegetation, and muddy bottoms. Spring and early summer are generally the best times to target carp here, as they become more active with the warming water temperatures and are often concentrated in shallower areas for spawning. A simple dough ball or corn rig fished on the bottom is usually effective. Access to some of these waterways can be tricky, so be sure to obtain permission from landowners before fishing on private property. Also, be aware that water levels can fluctuate depending on irrigation schedules, so check local conditions before heading out. The carp here tend to be robust and wary, so use a slightly heavier line than you might typically use for carp fishing elsewhere.
