Carp fishing near Ruidoso Downs might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but Grindstone Lake and the Rio Ruidoso itself actually hold a surprising number of these overlooked fish. The Rio Ruidoso, while small, offers opportunities for stalking carp in its slower-moving sections. Grindstone Lake is the more reliable option, with carp often congregating in the shallower, weedy areas. Corn, boilies, and dough baits are the standard fare. Pre-baiting a spot can significantly increase your chances of success. Spring and summer are good times to target carp as the water warms up. A local tip: Use polarized sunglasses to spot carp cruising near the surface, especially in the clear waters of Grindstone. The carp in this area can be quite wary, so stealth and a delicate presentation are key.
