Channel Catfish

Scranton, Arkansas, and the surrounding area provide decent channel catfish opportunities in its rivers and lakes. The Arkansas River is a major draw, providing the flowing water and diverse habitat that channel cats thrive in. Lake Dardanelle, formed by a dam on the Arkansas River, also offers a substantial channel catfish population. While you can catch channel cats year-round, the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, are generally the most productive. Look for them near structure, such as submerged timber, rocky points, and deep holes. Popular baits include stinkbaits, cut bait, nightcrawlers, and chicken liver. A simple Carolina rig or a three-way swivel rig works well. River access is available via several public boat ramps along the Arkansas River. Be mindful of strong currents, especially after heavy rainfall. The channel catfish in this region are generally of good size, with some reaching impressive weights. Local tip: Focus your efforts on areas where smaller creeks or streams enter the main river or lake, as these areas often concentrate baitfish and, consequently, catfish.
