Channel Catfish

Channel catfish are a readily available target in the waterways surrounding Chevy Chase Village. The Potomac River and its tributaries, such as the Anacostia, offer excellent channel catfishing. These fish are relatively adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, from muddy-bottomed creeks to the main river channel. Spring and summer are the best times to target them, as they become more active with warmer water temperatures. A simple bottom rig with stink bait, nightcrawlers, or cut bait is often all you need. A local tip: focus on areas with structure, such as submerged logs, riprap, or bridge pilings. Many local parks along the Potomac and Anacostia offer excellent bank fishing access. These catfish are known for their willingness to bite, making them a great option for beginner anglers. Remember to check local fishing regulations for size and creel limits. Also, be aware that smaller tributaries can be heavily fished, so explore to find less pressured spots.
