Channel Catfish

Vicksburg, Mississippi, offers some fantastic channel catfish opportunities, primarily in the mighty Mississippi River and its backwaters. The best fishing is usually from late spring through summer, as the water warms and catfish become more active. Look for them in areas with structure, such as submerged logs, riprap, and deep holes. The Old Highway 27 Bridge area is a popular spot for bank fishing, offering access to the river and some calmer backwater areas. For boaters, the public ramp at Levee Street provides good access to the main channel. Local anglers often have success using live nightcrawlers or cut bait, fished on a Carolina rig near the bottom. Be mindful of the strong currents in the Mississippi River, which can make boat control challenging. Vicksburg's catfish population is healthy, with consistent catches of fish in the 2-5 pound range, and larger specimens are always a possibility.
