Channel Catfish

If you're after whiskered giants in East Texas, Caney City offers excellent channel catfish opportunities. The key here is Cedar Creek Reservoir, a sprawling lake known for its healthy catfish population. Spring and early summer, particularly after heavy rains, are prime times as the catfish move into shallower waters to spawn. Look for them around flooded timber, creek channels, and rocky points. A simple Carolina rig with stinkbait or cut bait is a local favorite. For bank access, try the causeway near the dam; it's a popular spot, but offers plenty of room. Be mindful of boat traffic, especially on weekends. A fish finder can be invaluable for locating submerged structure where catfish congregate.
