Channel Catfish

Haltom City and the surrounding areas offer some decent Channel Catfish opportunities, primarily in the Trinity River and its feeder creeks. While there aren't any huge catfish reservoirs immediately adjacent, the river provides a steady population. The best time to target them is late spring through summer when the water is warmer. Channel cats are opportunistic feeders, so stink baits, cut bait, and nightcrawlers are all effective. A good strategy is to find areas with deeper holes or current breaks in the river. Remember, access to the Trinity can be limited in some areas, so scout out public access points or bridge crossings for easier fishing. Local tip: after a rain, the catfish tend to move into the creeks and smaller tributaries feeding the Trinity, following the fresh water and food washed in. The Channel Catfish here are generally good eating size, averaging a few pounds, but larger specimens are certainly possible.
