Channel Catfish

Channel Catfish are a readily available target in the freshwater resacas and canals surrounding Laguna Vista, Texas. These waterways, remnants of the Rio Grande's historic flow, offer excellent catfish habitat. The warmer months, from spring through fall, are ideal for targeting them, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours. Focus your efforts on areas with submerged structure, such as fallen trees, riprap, and bridge pilings. The resacas accessible from FM 510 provide multiple access points. A practical tip is to use a slip-sinker rig with a circle hook and your favorite catfish bait, like nightcrawlers, chicken liver, or commercial stink baits. Catfish in this area are generally opportunistic feeders, so experiment to find what they're biting on that day. Expect to catch Channel Catfish ranging from 1 to 5 pounds, with the occasional larger fish in the mix. Remember to check local regulations regarding size and bag limits before you start fishing.
