Channel Catfish

If you're looking for some fantastic channel catfish action in North Texas, Lavon is a great place to start. Lavon Lake, a large reservoir on the East Fork of the Trinity River, is the main draw. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are prime times. Catfish will be actively feeding as the water warms. Many anglers have success fishing near submerged timber and creek channels. Stink baits, cut shad, and even nightcrawlers will all produce. Bank fishing access is available at several parks around the lake, including Lavonia Park and Avalon Park. You can also launch a boat from multiple ramps, but be aware that lake levels can fluctuate, so check conditions before you go. The catfish in Lavon Lake tend to be good-sized, with many fish in the 5-10 pound range, and larger ones are always a possibility. A key tip is to pay attention to wind direction; catfish often congregate on the windward side of the lake where food is concentrated.
