Channel Catfish

Channel catfish provide consistent action for anglers around River Oaks. The West Fork of the Trinity River is a reliable spot for targeting these whiskered fish. Unlike flatheads, channel cats are more opportunistic feeders. Summer evenings are prime time, but they can be caught year-round. Simple rigs like a slip sinker with a circle hook baited with stink bait, nightcrawlers, or cut bait work well. Access the river at River Oaks Community Park or from various points along the river trails. Be mindful of the river's current, especially after rainfall. Channel catfish in this area are generally plentiful but not exceptionally large; expect to catch fish in the 1-3 pound range, with the occasional larger specimen. A good tip is to pre-bait your fishing spot for a few days before you plan to fish to attract more catfish to the area.
