Channel Catfish

Southmayd, Texas, provides a great starting point for targeting channel catfish in the Red River and its backwaters. Lake Texoma, just north of Southmayd, also holds a significant population of channel cats. The warmer months, from late spring through early fall (May-September), are prime time, as the catfish are actively feeding. Look for them in deeper holes and around submerged structure. Local anglers often use stinkbaits, cut bait, and even live shad to entice channel cats. A slip-sinker rig is effective for fishing the bottom. For river access, consider Denison Dam's tailrace, though be mindful of strong currents. On Texoma, try fishing near submerged timber or along rocky ledges. Keep an eye on water clarity; channel cats tend to bite better in slightly stained water. The average size is respectable, but Texoma can surprise you with larger specimens.
