Channel Catfish

For channel catfish near White Oak, Texas, Lake Cherokee and nearby smaller lakes and rivers offer good opportunities. Channel cats are relatively abundant and can be caught year-round, but the warmer months (late spring through summer) are generally the most productive. Look for catfish around submerged timber, creek channels, and rocky areas, especially after a rain when they become more active. Stink baits, cut bait, and nightcrawlers are all effective baits. A simple Carolina rig or a slip-sinker rig works well for fishing on the bottom. Many anglers fish for catfish at night, as they are often more active then. A good tip is to check the wind direction and fish on the downwind side of the lake, as the wind often concentrates baitfish and, consequently, catfish. Be aware of size and bag limits, which are enforced by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
