Cobia
Cobia fishing around Southern Shores can be exceptional, especially during their spring migration. These curious and hard-fighting fish are a real thrill to catch. Look for them around buoys, channel markers, and floating debris in the nearshore waters and the sounds. Sight fishing is popular and effective – cruising the waters and spotting them near the surface. Keep an eye out around the pilings of the Wright Memorial Bridge; cobia frequently congregate there. Live eels or bucktails tipped with soft plastics are go-to baits. Remember to check the regulations regarding size and bag limits, as they can change frequently. A good access point is the boat ramp at the end of Colington Road, giving you access to the Albemarle Sound and the ocean via Oregon Inlet. Be mindful of strong currents in the inlet.
