Cownose Ray

Point Judith, Rhode Island, offers exciting cownose ray fishing in its coastal waters. These graceful creatures migrate into the area during the warmer months, generally from late spring through early fall. They are plentiful in Narragansett Bay and the waters just offshore. A great tactic is to target shallow, sandy bottom areas with a slow drift, using pieces of crab or clam as bait. Because of their size, a medium to heavy action rod and a reel spooled with at least 20-pound test line are recommended. Be mindful of the strong currents in the area. A helpful tip is to launch from the Galilee Boat Ramp, which provides easy access to prime ray fishing grounds. Remember to handle these animals with care, and practice catch and release to help maintain a healthy population.
