If you're looking for some excellent crappie fishing in southern Alabama, Mount Vernon offers some great opportunities. The Mobile River and its associated tributaries and backwaters are prime crappie habitat. These waters offer the kind of structure crappie love – submerged timber, brush piles, and plenty of cover. Spring is undoubtedly the peak season, as the crappie move into shallower areas to spawn. Focus your efforts in the creeks and sloughs off the main river channel during this time. Fall can also be productive as the water cools and crappie feed heavily to prepare for winter. For bank access, try the areas around the bridges crossing the Mobile River delta. A small boat or kayak will allow you to explore the more secluded areas. Local tip: Pay attention to water clarity. Crappie tend to prefer slightly stained water, so look for areas where the water isn't too clear or too muddy.
