Crappie

Southeastern Alabama offers some great crappie fishing, and the Newton area is no exception. The backwaters and oxbow lakes connected to the Chattahoochee River hold populations of crappie that can provide a fun day on the water. Spring is the best time to target them as they move shallow to spawn. Focus your efforts around submerged brush, fallen trees, and any other structure that provides cover. Minnows are a classic crappie bait, but small jigs in various colors can also be effective. A local tip is to check water clarity before heading out, as it can fluctuate depending on rainfall. If the water is murky, try using brighter colored jigs or adding a scent attractant. Many anglers have success fishing from the bank or small boats in the quieter backwaters. Always respect private property and be mindful of any posted restrictions.
