If slab-sized crappie are on your mind, consider Walnut Grove, Alabama. The Coosa River, particularly the Logan Martin Lake impoundment, is the key to success. Logan Martin is renowned for its abundant crappie population and diverse structure. Target submerged timber, bridge pilings, and creek channels, especially during the pre-spawn and spawn periods in early spring (March-April). Fall (October-November) is another productive time as crappie school up in deeper water near structure. A local tip: Many anglers launch at the public ramp at the Hwy 77 bridge. Be aware of fluctuating water levels, especially after heavy rains. Minnows and jigs are the go-to baits, but experiment with colors and presentations to find what the crappie are hitting that day. Logan Martin crappie are known to be relatively aggressive, often hitting lures with force.
