If you're looking for some slab-sized crappie in the Phoenix metro area, Avondale offers a few surprisingly productive options. While not as well-known as some of the larger reservoirs in the state, the smaller lakes and ponds scattered around the area can hold some decent crappie populations, especially during the cooler months. Focus your efforts in the fall and winter, when the crappie are actively feeding in preparation for the spawn. Early spring can also be good as they move shallow to spawn. A local tip: Explore the community fishing lakes managed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department – these are often stocked and well-maintained. Small jigs and minnows fished under a bobber are always a good bet. Be aware that these smaller waters can be heavily pressured, so try to fish during off-peak hours and experiment with different presentations to find what the fish are responding to.
